Hillcrest Students Parent Info
If you missed the Fall Parent Meeting on Sunday 8/15 then you are in the right place.
Listed below is all (or at least most) of the information that we covered regarding Student Ministry activities for the Fall of 2010.
If you read all of this and still have questions then please call the Student Ministry office at 850-476-2233 or email me at dwiggins@hillcrestchurch.com.
Sunday Mornings
On Sunday mornings our students meet together in Life Groups. Life Groups are divided up by grade and gender. We use the time we have together to connect students with an adult who cares about them, with other teenagers, and with the truth of God’s Word. Our hope is that students will engage in this community and “do life” together for the gospel.
Middle School Life Groups meet at 9:30 in the Student Suite. There is no need to come into the Pier. We will meet you in the Student Suite and make sure you know exactly where to go. The Life Groups typically dismiss at 10:45. Here is a list of all of the Adult Leaders for the Middle School Life Groups:
6th Grade Girls – Peggy Wilson
6th Grade Guys – Jeff & Fatma Gaydon
7th Grade Girls – Cheri Welter
7th Grade Guys – John Porter
8th Grade Girls – Andrea Gallagher
8th Grade Guys – Alan MIller
These adults are the best group of Middle School volunteers in Pensacola and represent decades of Student Ministry experience. You can trust that your middle school student will be in good hands.
High School Life Groups meet at 11:00 in the Student Suite. Again, there is no need to come into the Pier. We will meet you in the Student Suite and make sure you know exactly where to go. These Life Groups typically dismiss at 12:15. Here is a list of all of the Adult Leaders for the High School Life Groups:
9th Grade Girls – Robert and Sandy Griffin
9th Grade Guys – Paul Madison and Gene & Renee Brown
10th Grade Girls – Joan & Kevin Coleman
10th Grade Guys – Shane Rice
11th Grade Girls – Jan Thomas
11th Grade Guys – Dr. Richard Sellers and Gus Ubelsteadt
12th Grade Coed – Brian & Rita Malone
These adults are the best group of High School volunteers in Pensacola and represent decades of Student Ministry experience. You can trust that your High School student will be in good hands.
There are four Sundays this Fall that we will not be meeting in small groups in the Student Suite:
- Sunday, October 10 – The majority of our students will be worshiping together at Camp Baldwin, AL for our Fall Retreat. We hope that your student will join us, but in the event that they can’t we will be having a large group Bible Study in the Pier that morning that is available to all students at both hours.
- Sunday, October 24 – We will be holding a “Student Worship Sunday” in the Pier this morning. Students will be encouraged to invite their friends and participate in a large group gathering with live music, games, Krispy Kreme donuts, and teaching. I’m guessing you’re thinking “you had me at Krispy Kreme”. Perfect. We will open both hours up to all grades. That means that your student will not be limited to a particular hour based on what grade they are in. We will not be in the Student Suite at all on this morning.
- Sunday, December 12 – We will be holding another “Student Worship Sunday” in the Pier on this day. We’re doing this as a “pre-rally” to our “Christmas Chaos” party that is taking place the following Wednesday, December 15. Just like the one in October, we will open both hours up to all grades. That means that your student will not be limited to a particular hour based on what grade they are in. We will not be in the Student Suite at all on this morning.
- Sunday, December 19 – This “Student Worship Sunday” will be a follow-up to the “Christmas Chaos” party mentioned above. Same as the rest, your student will not be limited to a particular hour based on what grade they are in. We will not be in the Student Suite at all on this morning.
Wednesday Nights
Our gathering on Wednesday nights is called “Pier Worship”. It is open to all students grades 6-12 and meets in the Pier.
We open the doors at 5:00 and go “live” at 6:30. From 5-6:30 we have a number of things available for students:
- We have a full service concession stand that serves CHEAP hot dogs, chips, candy, and sodas. This way, for under $5, your student can come early, hang out, and eat dinner.
- We have an arcade. All of the games are free. There’s a pool table, air hockey table, foosball, Wii, and XBox360.
- We have cornhole. It has sort of become the official game of Hillcrest Students. I’m undefeated.
- We have lots of other students hanging out and relaxing together.
When we hit 6:30, we create an environment where students can worship Jesus through live music, fun games, relevant videos, and dynamic teaching. Emma Kimsal and the Pier Band lead our music and you just have to hear them to appreciate how stinking good they are. We encourage students to bring their friends to Pier Worship because it is pretty much a guarantee that they are going to hear the Biblical gospel. We finish at 8:00.
The only Wednesday this Fall we won’t be meeting together is November 24. It’s because that’s the day before Thanksgiving. Other than that, listen for the music or follow the smell of the grill and watch your student get really, really, excited about coming to church.
Sunday Nights
Starting September 12, we will be meeting together from 6:00-7:30 on Sunday nights in small discipleship study groups. We use different curriculum and leaders for Middle and High School students so that we can take a specific approach to instruction. There are no real frills about this environment. No food, no music, no arcade. We are upfront with the students about this so that they know what we expect. This is an environment for teenagers with a deep desire to grow in their faith and in their knowledge of the scriptures.
The study groups are divided up by grade for high school and by gender for middle school. We will meet every Sunday night starting on September 12 with the exception of October 10 & 31 and November 28. We will meet for the last time on Sunday night, December 5.
FRX
FRX is the 2010 Fall Retreat and will be held at Camp Baldwin, AL on October 8-10. Hillcrest Students has gone to Camp Baldwin for the last 15 years. This retreat is an opportunity for your student to get away from many of the distractions that prevent them from hearing the voice of God. It is designed as an outreach opportunity to the lost and as an opportunity to worship and grow as a disciple.
Our friends John Mark Harrison and Bobby Smith will be coming to preach and lead worship, respectively. There is a bonfire, a “man ball” tournament, capture the flag, an 80’s prom, fishing, basketball, and a lot more.
The retreat costs $99 a person and registration is open now. Registration forms are available in the Pier or online at students.hillcrestchurch.com/forms.
This is A LOT of information so, like I said, do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions or if there is anything we can do for your family!!
